The 3rd International Lord Mayor's Big Curry Lunch

On 11th April 2024, the B3CF, a long-standing partner and supporter of The Lord Mayor's Big Curry Lunch, organised the third international satellite event in Finland, aimed at raising funds and supporting His Majesty's veterans, a growing number of whom permanently reside in Finland. Traditionally hosted at Svenska Klubben in Helsinki, the event began with a celebratory Pol Roger Champagne reception provided by Vinetum.

Guests were treated to a luxurious curry buffet featuring a variety of choices including lamb, chicken, salmon-shellfish, and vegetarian curry. The exceptional culinary skills of Chef Nico Devandara, marking his third consecutive year at our event, were a highlight. His dishes received widespread acclaim, affirming his reputation for consistently surpassing expectations. The beverages complementing the curry were thoughtfully selected; guests enjoyed Spitfire Golden Ale courtesy of Servaali and a selection of Zensa red and white wines from Hartwall. The combination of fine food and exquisite drinks created an atmosphere of genuine pleasure and festivity.

The formal proceedings were initiated by Vladislav Dobrokhotov, our Executive Director, who opened the floor by warmly thanking the team at Svenska Klubben for their dedication and superb service. He then provided a historical overview of the International Lord Mayor’s Big Curry Lunch in Finland, enhancing guests' appreciation for the event's roots and significance.

This year's lunch was particularly memorable due to the presence of Co-Chairman Michael Hockney MBE, who not only introduced the cause supported by the lunch but also shared video greetings from the Lord Mayor of the City of London, Michael Mainelli, further connecting our local efforts to the broader, global community of supporters. Other distinguished guests included Minister Pertti Salolainen CBE, HE Charles Josob, Ambassador of Namibia to Finland, Kirsti Bourret, Chargé d'Affaires at the British Embassy, and Paul Jancar, Head of the Political Team.

The presentation by Stephen Shapcott, Chairman of the HM Armed Forces Veterans Finland group, reflected deeply as he paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Chairman Peter Martin, honoring him during a toast to friends missed but remembered.

The vote of thanks was delivered by Garry Parker, who expressed gratitude towards the Finland-NATO seminar speakers, Otto Saxén and Micce Franck, and acknowledged the contributions of all involved, including the committee members, our sponsor Rödl & Partner—particularly Nora Haapala—and the silent auction prize donors.

The camaraderie and shared stories continued at the bar of the recently opened ultra-luxury Hotel Maria. The evening was filled with engaging conversations and reflections, encapsulating the spirit of community and charity that defines the Lord Mayor’s Big Curry Lunch. Our sincere appreciation extends to Hotel Maria for their exceptional hospitality, to Bentley Suomi for providing luxurious transportation, ensuring our guests traveled in style and comfort, and to J.Cortés for providing our guests with Dominican cigars.

The 3rd International Lord Mayor’s Big Curry Lunch not only provided an occasion for delectable cuisine and distinguished company but also underscored the chamber’s ongoing commitment to fostering meaningful connections and supporting commendable causes through our events.
